Councillor Fouweather
asked:
At the last council
meeting in February you commented that residents who cannot manage
with the smaller bins should stop being extravagant when they shop.
Do you still stand by this comment?
Secondly there is very little
difference in the amount of waste produced by a family of four or
five yet families of four are expected to manage with the smaller
size bin. Will you consider allowing families of four to have the
larger bin if they request it?
Councillor Forsey
responded:
As part of national and local waste
strategies, reduction in consumption of single use materials is
critical, both financially and environmentally.
NCC provides a frequent collection of
most waste streams directly from households. We anticipate this
year over 70% of waste will be separated for recycling, which is
one of the best performances in the entire UK.
Even with a very high recycling rate,
our latest composition study, shows that nearly half of the waste
in domestic bins, could, however, have been easily recycled.
For anyone who requires help, a free
waste education visit can be arranged, so that officers can offer
tailored advice and support.
Whilst we have dramatically improved
our performance over the last two decades, for both financial and
environmental reasons it is imperative that we all work together to
reduce, reuse and recycling and remove dependency on finite
resources.
