Question to the Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Biodiversity: 2024/29 - Canal Renovations

Minutes:

Councillor Reeks asked:

It ss pleasing to see the ongoing renovation works of the Mon & Brecon canal through Rogerstone, and welcome the next stage of these works in the form of the desilting and relining. Residents however have raised concerns about the impact on the wildlife and fish during these renovations, noting that fish are potentially dying due to overheating in the shallow water. Can the Cabinet member confirm what steps are in place to protect them and what assurances can they give that there will be no long term damage to the wildlife and fish during this next stage of works.

Councillor Forsey responded:

The Canal works are carried under supervision, following an ecology assessment and where necessary have an ecologist watching brief.

Where necessary fish and amphibian life is relocated whilst works progress.

Sections of the canal have historically dried up over summer and the renovation works should help to prevent this from happening in the future.
