Question to the Leader of the Council : 2024/14 - SWFS Membership

Councillor Fouweather asked:

Now that the South Wales Fire Service has a body appointed by the Welsh assembly to oversee its running can you tell me if Newport City Council will be appointing councillors to be part of the authority at the next AGM  as they do not have a function anymore?

Can you also confirm if the two members currently on the fire authority are still receiving an allowance ?

Councillor Batrouni responded:

On 5 February 2024, the Welsh Government gave Directions appointing four commissioners to exercise the functions of the South Wales Fire and Rescue Authority.  These Directions came into effect on 6th February 2024.

The appointed commissioners will exercise those functions until further notice.  This is a temporary change of governance as opposed to a permanent one and the Authority has not been disbanded.  The Council appointed its proportionate share of members of the Authority at its AGM in the usual way.  Those members will fulfil the duties of their appointment following the end of the current interim arrangement.

The remuneration of members is a matter for the Fire Authority, not the Council.
