Question to the Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Assets : 2023/13 - Active Travel Grants

Minutes:

Councillor Townsend asked:

It was disappointing to hear that Newport received the second lowest active travel grant, from the Welsh Government for this financial year.

The figures are approximately equal to £5.01 per head in Newport, compared to £9.55 for Cardiff, £10.97 for Torfaen and £84.73 for Monmouthshire.

Given the level of contact from residents in relation to road safety, will the cabinet member share with members, the likely active travel capital priorities and schemes in Newport for this year?

Councillor Lacey responded:

In the last four years Newport has been awarded over £17.7m in Active Travel funding which is more than double the national average.

It is important to note that Newport receives additional investment through the burns implementation work, this includes active travel investment (such as NCN88 Newport-Cardiff and Old Green development incorporating Active Travel walking/cycling routes) as well as broader public transport interventions.

Current projects in development include Newport Central Connections, Gwasted Bridge and Pill Millenium Route.

Active travel priorities are developed from consultation on the Active Travel Network Map which is reviewed and updated every three years.
