Question to the Leader : 2022/20 - Newport Ship Re-location

Minutes:

Councillor M. Evans asked:

It is just over 20 years since the Newport Ship was discovered. Can you tell us how far advanced plans are for its re-location, how much capital funding has been put aside by the Council to fund it and is it a political priority?

The Leader responded:

I am pleased to confirm that the final batch of timbers are being treated and freeze dried and we hope they will be returned to the ship centre in early 2023. At that point we can start working with the Friends of the Newport Ship on the feasibility work required to consider how and where the ship could be reconstructed in a permanent home.  This was a commitment in the Labour Manifesto and remains a pledge.  It would not be appropriate to allocate capital funding at this point in advance of any feasibility work being undertaken.

In the interim our focus remains on working in partnership with the Friends of the Newport Ship to improve the visitor experience at the ship centre through digital technology including VR, increasing our work with community groups and young people and collecting baseline data that will be vital for any future opportunities.
