Question to the Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure: 2022/03 - Plans for the Well-being of Local Children Minutes: Councillor R. Mogford asked:
As a City councillor representing a semi-rural ward, can you tell me what improvements or concrete plans you have in place to benefit the lives and well-being of our children specifically in the East of the City and the ward I represent. I often hear residents say that there is little for the children to do in the area. Since losing our local leisure centre several years ago the situation does not seem to be getting better.
Surely there is so much more the council can do? If not, then let's be clear so that expectations can be managed.
Councillor D. Harvey responded:
Area play provision is currently managed through a Play Sufficiency Assessment, which identifies community needs and investment opportunities and considers things such as the provision of inclusive play, access, consultation and standards. By way of example, in 2021 repair works were undertaken to equipment in Parry Drive, Somerton Park and Underwood play areas in order to ensure that these facilities were in good working order. Other improvements in the East of the City are also proposed, including a brand new Multi Use Games Area within Ringland as part of the proposals put forward by ABUHB, upgrading of Beechwood tennis courts through funding from Sport Wales, and replacement apparatus at Black Ash Park where damage was caused by joyriders and is being funded by the Play Opportunity Grant.
Language and play is offered within the East Hub and 1-2-1 interventions through the play team are offeredwithin the home. Parenting support and speech and language support continues to be offered within a group and home setting and this is available to any family in need in all parts of the City. The Youth Academy and Aspire programmes operate at Alway, Ringland and Moorland and Broadmead. |
