Question to the Leader: 2022/02 - Salary for the Role of Presiding Officer

Minutes:

Councillor R. Mogford asked:

Leader,

a) Do you agree with your colleague and former Cabinet Member Cllr Whitcutt that the additional remuneration mooted for the new role of presiding Officer is a 'piffling' amount money?

b) Also, can you confirm or deny that salary and associated pension contributions  are the only additional cost for the role and that no extra money will be needed for example to pay, a 'Deputy' Presiding Officer to cover absences etc, going forward.

The Leader responded:

In accordance with the recommendations of the Independent Remuneration Panel for Wales for 2022/23, the additional costs of appointing a Presiding Member would be £8,793 per annum.  This represents the difference between a Councillor’s basic salary of £16,800 and a senior salary of £25,593. It is the same level of senior salary that is paid to other Committee Chairs, the Mayor and Leader of the Opposition.  Therefore, it is considered to be commensurate with the level of responsibility involved. The only additional costs to the Council would be in relation to any pension contributions associated with the difference in salary, which would be in the regional of £2,000.  No additional remuneration is paid to the Deputy Presiding Officer.
