Question to the Cabinet Member for Education and Skills: 2021/13- St Julian's School

Councillor Routley asked:

Given your statement at last council regarding your position as Chair of Governors at St Julian’s School, isn’t this position incompatible with your current responsibility as Cabinet Member for Education and Skills?

Councillor Davies replied:

When a school is in an Estyn category it requires strong, effective and consistent leadership. There have been many changes in the schools leadership over the past year and I am confident that my continuing role provides the school with stability and a secure direction of travel. During the last Estyn monitoring visit, inspectors saw much progress. The school is on an upward trajectory and I am committed to supporting the school until St Julian’s is ‘at least’ out of an Estyn category.

I have been advised by the Monitoring Officer there is no legal reason why the Cabinet Member for Education cannot be the Chair of Governors. I am absolutely clear that I would be unable to take any formal Cabinet Member decisions relating to or affecting St Julian’s school. If this situation arose, such decisions would be passed to the Leader. There is no impediment to my continuing role as Chair of Governors.
