Question to Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development: 2020/17 Transforming Towns Grant Funding

Minutes:

Councillor M Evans asked:

I understand Newport City Council has received £277,515 from Welsh Government in respect of the Transforming Towns Grant Funding but a recent FOI revealed only £5,908 has been spent. What is the reason for the delay and what do you intend to spend the rest of the money on? In respect of the Local Sustainable Transport Fund I notice we only received £600,000’s yet our Neighbours in Torfaen received £1.3 million what are the reasons for this?

Councillor D Davies Responded:

£25,000 revenue funding was awarded for place marketing.  £15,000 will be defrayed imminently, with the remainder due to be spent by the end of the financial year.

£70,616 capital funding was awarded to support delivery of the Information Station project and will be fully spent within the financial year.

£181,899 capital funded was awarded to undertake a series of green infrastructure projects within the city centre.  All funding will be utilised by the end of the financial year.

This is one of a suite of Welsh Government transport grants.  Each stream has different criteria and Councils are requested to submit capital bids to the fund with the most relevant criteria. This grant was aimed at schemes that could assist with post-covid transport interventions.  Newport City Council’s allocation from the full range of WG transport grants is £5.04 Million.
