Question to the Cabinet Members for City Services and Social Services: 2020/08 - Time Scale for the Removal of Disabled Parking Bays

Minutes:

Councillor M. Evans asked:

It has come to my attention that we do not have a time scale for the removal of disabled parking bays.

One person has informed he that he has been trying to get one removed for two years after the occupant who needed it, died.

Can the Cabinet Member explain why we do not have a time scale and what they intend to do about the current unacceptable situation?

Councillor Jeavons and Councillor Cockeram responded:

Although a Disabled Persons Parking Bay (DPPP) will have been applied for by a resident, the traffic order allows its use by any holder of a current Blue Badge.

Therefore, any decision to revoke the traffic order and remove a DPPP is only undertaken following confirmation that it is not needed and that no further applications have been received for new bays within the locale. This assessment, together with new DPPP’s is undertaken by Adult Services.

Where a revocation is authorised, it will be included in the statutory process alongside proposed new DPPP’s.  The assessment and legal process required to create new bays or revoke existing ones is undertaken annually.

I am unable to comment on this specific case, as I am unaware of the resident’s details, but if, Cllr Evans, you wish to provide me with a name and address, I will ask officers to investigate.
