Question to the Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development: 2020/07 - Electric Car Charging Points

Minutes:

Councillor C. Evans asked:

Dear Cabinet Member – it is good that our Council has received funding to provide some electric car charge points throughout our city. Could you update us on progress please? When and where will these charge points be available? How will you decide where they go?

Most people in Newport don’t live in homes with drives and/or private garages, their homes are on streets, roads or terraces with no private space outside.

With this in mind, will you follow other Councils and introduce a scheme where residents can request the installation of charging points for electric cars on their street, road etc? Whereby making access to charging points available for the many, not just the few.

Councillor Davies responded:

The grant funding received to date will provide charging infrastructure in the Council’s pay and display car parks, enabling residents who live nearby to charge overnight.  The car parks were selected based on the grant criteria and charging points are currently being installed. They will be available for use on April 1st 2020.

I appreciate that there will be a need for further charging points, but there are a range of challenges to overcome when considering the installation of charge points on the public highway.  I have asked officers to continue their work on investigating opportunities for on-street charging points with Welsh Government and other partners.
