Question to the Cabinet Member for City Services: 2019/38 - Electric Cars and Hybrid/Low Emission Cars in City Centre

Minutes:

Councillor C. Evans asked:

Dear Cabinet Member,

Could you provide us with an update on the feasibility study this council has? I believe it has received funding for providing electric car charge points throughout our city.

When will the study be published?

Will the findings be made public? If so, when?

Will your administration also consider offering free car parking in and around our city centre to those who drive electric and hybrid/low emission cars?

Councillor Jeavons responded:

Site studies were commissioned (with WG and NRW support) as part of a feasibility study to inform the development of a regional funding bid to Central Government.

As a result of this application, the Council has received a grant offer as part of a collaborative project with 4 other local authorities This local authority group is currently out to tender for a contractor to install and operate charging points in each area. In Newport, this includes points in 5 city centre car parks.

The study was site specific and operational in nature and there is not an intention to publish it.

Drivers of electric vehicles will be able to park for free to charge their vehicles overnight in Local Authority owned car parks. Free parking at other times will be considered as part of a wider approach to electric vehicle charging.
