Question to the Cabinet Member for Education and Skills : 2019/4 - Installation of "Living Walls"

Minutes:

Councillor Joan Watkins asked:

Given the high and unacceptable levels of air pollution resulting in poor air quality which impacts on health across High St Caerleon, will the Cabinet Member consider the installation of “Living Walls “to protect the children attending Charles Williams Primary School given the school sits on High St  thereby putting the children at substantial health risk.  These walls are being installed elsewhere to support the protection of the population in areas of poor air quality.

Councillor Gail Gailes responded:

The health and well-being of children in our schools is of the highest importance. Following the last Caerleon ward meeting, I took immediate action and asked officers to look into the suitability of this kind of measure across all Newport schools including Charles William CIW Primary School.

Should this approach be deemed suitable and appropriate, I will instruct officers to look into possible funding sources to establish if a viable scheme could be devised to implement such measures across the city. As I am leading this work, I will update Ward Members of progress at the appropriate time.
