Question to the Leader: 2018/16 - 'Tomorrow's Democracy' Conference

Minutes:

Councillor Joan Watkins asked:

Could Cllr Wilcox explain please what she expects the outcome to be in respect of the Tomorrow’s Democracy Conference on 5 November 2018.

The Leader responded:

The Tomorrow’s Democracy conference was held as part of our corporate plan commitments to develop an exciting programme of local events, raising the profile of Newport on the national stage, and hopefully encourage more visitors and investors into the city.  It followed the recommendations of the City of Democracy report to stage a Festival of Democracy as part of our destination offer.

The event attracted some very high calibre speakers and attendees, from all across the UK, and we received very positive feedback from participants on the event, on the content and the location.   One of the keynote speakers, Matthew Taylor, also featured the conference on his blog on the RSA website – a platform with national and international reach.  In the coming weeks and months we will review the outcomes and legacy of the event in more detail, including consideration of how this type of event fits within the regular events programme for the City.
