Question to the Cabinet Member for Education and Skills: Welsh in Education Strategic Plan

Minutes:

Councillor David Fouweather asked:

The Welsh in education strategic plan (WESP) has not been accepted by the minister for the welsh language at the Assembly.

Can the leader tell me what areas of the WESP the minister does not agree with?

Why have you published the WESP on the council website when it has not been agreed and could have some major changes?

Who advised you that you could publish the WESP without the agreement of the minister as to its content?

Councillor Gail Giles responded:

The third draft of the Welsh in Education Strategic Plan (WESP) was submitted to Welsh Government in May 2018. Newport City Council has received notification that the WESP has yet to be approved. The Leader has a meeting with the Minister on September 26th when discussions will take place regarding the next steps to gaining approval of the WESP.

The latest version of the draft WESP has been published on the Newport City Council website for information. The webpage and the plan itself have both been updated to reflect explicitly that this is a draft plan.
